Overview

Earth Charter International

The Earth Charter (EC) is a document with sixteen principles powering a global movement. The EC enunciates the values and principles by which sustainable development can be achieved.
The EC is an ethical foundation for actions to build a more just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It articulates a mindset of global interdependence and shared responsibility. It offers a vision of hope and a call to action.

The EC is a product of a decade-long, worldwide, cross-cultural dialogue on common goals and shared values. It is used as an educational instrument; as a reference and tool in the development of policies, planning; and decisions and in many other ways.

The Earth Charter document starts with the Preamble, followed by the four pillars: Respect and Care for the Community of Life, Ecological Integrity, Social and Economic Justice, and Democracy, Nonviolence, and Peace. It concludes with The Way Forward.

Our Programs

The Earth Charter & ESD School Seal (ECSS)

The Earth Charter & ESD School Seal is a global recognition scheme for primary and secondary schools that fully integrate the Earth Charter’s 16 ethical principles into their operations. Much like the FEE Green Flag, it moves beyond simple environmental projects to evaluate a school’s total institutional culture. The program assesses three core pillars: Teaching and Learning, which embeds sustainability across the curriculum; Institutional Management, which focuses on "greening" school facilities and operations; and Community Engagement, which encourages active partnerships with the local environment and families. The program functions as a tiered journey of improvement—ranging from Bronze to Gold—starting with a rigorous digital self-assessment of the school’s current values and practices. By participating, schools gain official recognition from the UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development, access to a worldwide network of partner schools, and specialized teaching resources. It essentially serves as a roadmap for schools to transform into "living laboratories" where students learn to lead with a sense of global responsibility and ecological integrity.
